Dr. Tina T Smith
Dr. Tina T. Smith is Chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology
at Tennessee State University (TSU) and a Professor of Speech-Language
Pathology. She received a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology in 1988 from
the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the M.A. (in 1981) and B.A. (in
1980) degrees in the area from South Carolina State University. Her areas of
specialty are adult language and she teaches courses in research methods, adult
aphasia and neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
As a dedicated speech-language pathologist, Dr. Smith has made contributions
to her profession for over 36 years. She served as a faculty member at South
Carolina State University from 1987-1994, and the University of South Carolina
from 1994-2001, before matriculating to Tennessee State University in 2002.
Dr. Smith has published numerous articles, she has been the recipient of many
training grants, and she has presented more than 100 papers at conferences in
the areas of multicultural diversity, language/phonology, treatment efficacy, and
distance education. She is the Director of Distance Education for the Master of
Science degree program in Speech and Hearing Science in the Department of
Speech Pathology and Audiology at TSU, and she developed and implemented
the first distance education master degree programs in speech-language
pathology in the both the states of South Carolina and Tennessee and in the
United States Virgin Islands.
Dr. Smith has been active in her profession on both the State and National
levels. She is a past president of the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing
Association. She also served as an American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association Legislative Councilor for South Carolina for 5 years and has been a
member of numerous task forces, advisory boards, and national committees in
her area. She also served as a writer for the PRAXIS examination in Speech-
Language Pathology.
Dr. Smith is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the
Links Incorporate, and she is an associate member of Jack and Jill of American
Incorporated. She is married to John H. Smith, Jr and is the proud mother of
Jason, Justin and Jade.
